Some clients may refer to the experience as guilt mainly because the word shame is not in their vocabulary. Clients may need to be taught basic terms so they can begin to distinguish between these feelings. But they certainly shouldn't get them involved in highly intellectual discussions about the subtle differences between shame and guilt.
