For a very long time, money was made of noble metals (gold and silver), which nature, as if specially created for this role. The physical properties of precious metals (homogeneity, strength, intrinsic value) ideally met the requirements for a monetary commodity. But, as soon as gold established itself in the role of money, it turned out that it did not necessarily have to participate in circulation, but could be replaced by any of its representatives.

Nature does not always hint at love to us. It also threatens us; it reminds... of inaccessible secrets. Isn't it supposed to consume us, isn't it constantly devouring us? There is life and death in it; and death speaks as loudly in it as life.

Nature is irresistible; she has no need to rush, and sooner or later she will take her toll. Unconsciously and unswervingly obedient to the laws, she does not know art, just as she does not know freedom, just as she does not know goodness; moving from eternity, passing away from eternity, it does not tolerate anything immortal, nothing unchangeable. The man is her child; but the human - the artificial - is hostile to it, precisely because it strives to be unchangeable and immortal.

Nature cannot cope with logic, with our human logic; it has its own, which we do not understand and do not recognize until it runs over us like a wheel.

I understood the life of nature, I understood its mysterious meaning. Quiet and slow animation, unhurriedness and restraint of sensations and forces, the balance of health in each individual being - this is its very foundation, its unchanging law, this is what it stands on and rests on. Everything that comes out from under this level - whether up or down, it doesn’t matter - is thrown out by it as worthless.

There is always a reckoning in this world. There are two attorney generals: one is the one who stands at your door and punishes offenses against society, the other is nature itself. She knows all the vices that elude the laws.

Man is a child of nature; but she is the universal mother, and she has no preferences: everything that exists in her womb arose only at the expense of another and must in due time give way to another - she creates, destroying, and she does not care: what she creates, what she destroys - if only life would not be translated, if only death would not lose its rights...

Woe to the one who tries to lift the veil from nature and woe to the one who lifts the veil from society.
