When a commoner cultivates virtue and does good deeds, he is a chancellor without a title. When a nobleman uses power for personal gain and trades favors, he ends up becoming a beggar endowed with high rank.

The ability to write was what seemed important. Literary ability is already a virtue.

What makes people do unethical or immoral things? They are always the result of a mistaken search for happiness, that is, they indicate a failed attempt to achieve it, since, as Aristotle believed, virtue is not only the path to happiness, but also an important part of happiness itself. Unfortunately, people confuse the highest good with transitory and apparent good, identifying it with pleasure, while pain seems to them to be evil.

Wise people always do virtuous actions without expecting results.

The first and fundamental rule of virtue: it must be loved for its own sake. Anyone who tells the truth because due to some extraneous reasons he is forced to do so, or because it is more useful for him, and who is not afraid to lie when it is completely safe, cannot be called a truthful person.

Hope is weak as a virtue to die last and strong as an illusion to die first.

Our actions are nothing more than scattered, uncoordinated actions, and we want, using false names, to earn honor. Virtue demands that it be observed for its own sake; and if sometimes they hide behind it for other purposes, it immediately tears the mask off your face.

A noble torso, a high chest, heaving with the even beat of a royal heart, a lively and clear gaze, pure, proud features, and there under the water, in a muddy wave - who knows? - perhaps a supernatural continuation is hidden - the flexible and ugly, terrible tail of a dragon. Unattainable virtue, hiding vicious dreams...

I end my speech with advice: dear sirs and ladies, grow in your soul, in its brightest corner, such beautiful flowers as virtue, modesty, honesty, justice and love. Then each of us will be able, here in this world, to decorate our window with a small pot of flowers.
