Fyodor Dostoevsky. Diary of a writer (№ 116641)

No man is ready to repeat most of the Russian: "what do I care about what I say" or "I don't care about public opinion," and no man would be more Russian (again civilized) more afraid, trembling more General opinion, what you say or think. It comes from deep in this hidden disrespect, with immense, of course, conceit and vanity. These two opposites are always sitting in almost every intelligent Russian, and for the first and unbearable, so that each of them is like "hell in the soul."
