There are many interpretations of dreams, the most famous is the Freudian, but I always thought that dreams perform simple hygienic function, no more than that: dreams are our mind's taking a dump every time when heaping voluminous pile. And people who don't have dreams (or see, but upon awakening cannot remember) in some sense mental constipation. In the end, the nightmare has only one practical use: to Wake up and realize that this is just a dream.
