Proponents praise the United States as a world leader and sole superpower, but opponents denounce them as an imperialist oppressor. Both of these opinions are based on the assumption that the US just picked up the mantle of world domination, which dropped the peoples of Europe. If the nineteenth century was British, the twentieth century was the American, or generally speaking, if modernity was European, then postagreement is an American.
