Sorge was carrying out espionage activities on a broad scale, not only against the Japanese but against Germany in favor of Soviet Russia. In particular, he gave the Russian time of the German attack on Russia, and also told them that Japan would enter the war against Russia. This allowed Russia to free their Siberian divisions and throw them on the Western front against Germany.
