Vladimir Nabokov. Lolita (№ 5164)

If the roadside sign of the shop read: "we Buy the gifts!" we just had to go there, were there to buy all sorts of stupid Indian items, dolls, copper trinkets, cactus candy. The phrase "gifts and Novelties" directly fascinated her by their trochaic lilt. If some café sign proclaimed "Ice Drinks," she mechanically responded to the invitation, even though all drinks everywhere were ice-cold. It spoke to her ads, she was the ideal consumer, the subject and object of every foul poster.
