I was deeply surprised by what delusion keep the world corrupt hacks, attributing the greatest military feats cowards, wise counsel to fools, sincerity to flatterers, Roman valor - traitors, piety to atheists, truth to informers. I found out how many innocent and excellent men were sentenced to death or exile because of the machinations of powerful Ministers. How many villains were erected on high posts, was imbued with the confidence, power, honor and showered with material possessions. What a low opinion I had of human courage, wisdom and integrity, when I received truthful information about the springs and motives of great events and revolutions, and those little accidents that they owe their success.
