Only once I saw Atticus really angry when Elmer Davis on the radio told about Hitler. Atticus yanked off the receiver and said, "f-fou!". Once I asked him why he was so angry with Hitler and Atticus said, Because he's crazy.

But in one respect, in our country all people are equal, we have one establishment, a single institution, before which all are equal - poor and Rockefeller, the stupid, and Einstein, ignorant and rector of the University. This institution, gentlemen, is nothing like the court. Still, whether the Supreme court of the United States or the humblest magistrate's court in the wilderness somewhere, or this honourable court which you now sit. Our courts have flaws, like all human institutions, but the court in our country is the great equalizer, and truly all people are equal. I'm not an idealist and do not believe the jury the best of ships, for me it's not ideal, but the current operating reality. The court in General, gentlemen, are no better than each of you, the jury. Court reasonable only insofar as a reasonable jury, and the jury as a whole is reasonable only insofar as reasonable each of them. I am sure, gentlemen, that you impartially consider the testimony that you heard here, make a decision and return the defendant to his family. For God's sake, fulfill his duty.

The man stood now on the hill for witnesses, had only one advantage over its immediate neighbours: if it is a long time to wash with lye soap in very hot water, his skin became white.

I don't know, Jim, when you get older, and the truth will better understand people, and I will not. I know for sure.

Whatever it is, a mob consists of people. Last night Mr. Cunningham was part of the crowd, but he was still human. Every mob in every little southern town is made up of people whom we know, from the most ordinary of people, and it's not very flattering for them, isn't it?
