My father was a man of reserved and at the end of life is awfully lonely. As a child I loved to ask him questions, and he always tried to answer them, and if could not, smiled and led me to walk on the pier. In the evening, standing on tiptoe, I saw him sitting at the kitchen table and studying the encyclopedia. The next morning, at Breakfast, dad said casually, "Yesterday you asked me a question, but we digress, and I forgot to reply, so..."
