Girls may be discouraged from exploring the world and in control of my life, and on the contrary encourage to develop skills to manipulate others so that they then acted on their behalf. Thus, girls receive lessons of helplessness.
Even when we women grow older, many of us continue to believe that the power we have over their lives is minimal. We can transfer the right to the decisions of others, presenting their lives as something that happens to us by itself. These beliefs are underpinned by children's identification with the very dependent and helpless mother, pushing many women in marriages where there is violence.
