Charles Morras. (№ 452176)

The nation is everything, the individual is nothing.
Quote Explanation: The existence of a nation in Marras was endowed with such a high meaning that a person in this picture acquired some significance only when he devoted himself entirely to the service of the national cause. This fanatical patriotism had a special attraction for all sorts of marginal strata of society - these all rejected, lonely and helpless people for whom the idea of national greatness seemed to be generally the last opportunity to regain at least some sense of pride and self-respect. Such ideologies completely sever any and all links between nationalism and democracy. Morra therefore portrayed democracy as a source of weakness and corruption in society, calling for the restoration of absolute monarchy.
