The Sicilians have a saying: a girl cannot be considered beautiful until she has had smallpox. Once upon a time, everyone suffered from smallpox, and a girl’s appearance could only be adequately assessed after she had survived the disease. Only by assessing what was left after smallpox could one affirmatively judge whether the girl was beautiful or not.
