It is very easy and without effort understand the motives that led these people, and as a man of the people, completely sympathised with them. She realized that these people were for the people against the lords; and that these people were themselves the Lord and sacrificed their advantages, freedom and life for the people, made her particularly appreciate these people and admire them.

Exhausted, wet, dirty, she returned home, and from that day began the spiritual revolution, as a result of which she became what she was now. Since that dreadful night, she ceased to believe in goodness. She had believed in goodness and that people believe in him, but this night made sure that no one believes in it and that all that talk about God and goodness, doing this only in order to deceive people. He whom she loved, and who loved her, she knew, - had thrown her away; had abused her love. And he was the best of all the people she knew. Still others were even worse. And all that happened to her, every step of the way confirmed this. His aunts, the pious old ladies, turned her out when she could no longer serve them as before. All the people she met, women tried using it to raise money, men, beginning with old Stanovoy and to prison guards, was staring at her as the object of pleasure. And for anyone, there was nothing else in the world, once a pleasure, it is fun. This had strengthened her old author with whom she was involved in the second year of his life in freedom. He actually told her this - he called it poetry and aesthetics - is all happiness.
Everybody lived for himself only, for his pleasure, and all words about God and righteousness was deception. If, however, when questions were raised about why in the world everything is arranged so badly that all give each other the evil and all the suffering, it was necessary not to think about it. Bored, smoked, or drank, or, best of all, fell in love with a man, and pass.
