Character: Abba Dorotheos

Why is the devil called not only enemy, but the enemy? The enemy is called because he's a misanthrope, a hater of good and a slanderer; the adversary is called because he tries to hinder every good work. If anyone wants to pray, he opposes and hinders his evil memories, capture the mind and gloominess. If anyone wants to give charity: it prevents avarice and scopolia. If anyone wants to watch: it prevents laziness, and carelessness, and so he resists us, in any case, when I want to do a good. Therefore he is called not only enemy, but the enemy.
