Theodore Dreiser. Jenny Gerhardt (№ 14333)

Not all intelligence is measured by some one reckless act; not everyone can be judged by one particular passion. In our age, the action of material forces almost invincible, they oppress and crush the soul. With alarming rapidity develops and becomes more complex our civilization, diverse and changing forms of social life, in our fragile, refined and perverse imagination extremely diverse and unexpectedly influenced by such factors as roads, Railways, fast trains, post, Telegraph and telephone, Newspapers - in short, all the mechanism available in our society, means of communication and connection. All of this creates a kaleidoscopic diversity, blinding, chaotic phantasmagoria of life that wearies, stuns the brain and heart. Hence a kind of mental fatigue, and every day multiplies the number of its victims - those who suffer from insomnia, melancholy or black just going crazy. The brain of modern man, apparently, still not able to accommodate, sort and store a huge mass of events and experiences that fall daily on it. We live too visible, there's nowhere to hide from the outside world. We have too much to take. Exactly the everlasting wisdom tries to make his way in close to the skull and fit in the limited minds.
