Aldous Huxley. The doors of perception (№ 172471)

We live together, we act and react on one another; but always and in all circumstances, we - by themselves. In the arena of the martyrs go hand in hand; crucify them one by one. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single semitransparency; in vain. By its very nature, every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude. Sensations, feelings, insights, whims - they are all personal and not transferable, except through symbols and at second hand. We may collect information about the experience, but never the experience itself. From family to nation, every group of people is a society of island universes.
