Seventy-six percent of Singaporeans are of Chinese origin, and so their culture places special emphasis on the Wu Lun or "five relationships": between the father and the son where there should be love; between sovereign and Minister, which must be justice; between husband and wife, which should be attention to the individual responsibilities of each; between old and young, where there should be order; between friends, where there should be loyalty. For them, of course, that society's interests are above the interests of the individual. They do not believe in the boundless individualism of the Americans.
