Do not think that the highest nobility consists in shutting yourself off from those whom we consider evil or even our enemies. The enemy must be defeated; but they win not by a passive withdrawal to the side, but by an active struggle, a heroic tension of feelings and thoughts. It is impossible for a gifted person - one who is destined to contribute a drop of his creative work to the work of all mankind - serenely, without storms, suffering and struggle with himself and those around him.
