Animals do not behave like people. They fight, when to fight, and kill, when to kill. But they never wrapped all their natural resourcefulness and sharpness, only to invent a new way to cripple the life of another living creature. They never lose their sense of dignity and animals.

Many say that I love winter, but really they're own protection from winter ills. People don't need to look for food. They have stoves and warm clothing. In cold weather people do not die, but only feel stronger reliability of dwellings and their superiority over the animal world. Very different are cold weather birds, beasts and the poor. For rabbits, winter remains what it was for medieval man, the time of trouble that their own ingenuity is doing it is tolerable and not without their pleasures.
