The mutability of the past is the Central tenet of Ingsoc. It is argued that past events have no objective existence, but survive only in written records and in human memories. The past is what is consistent with recordings and memories. And since the party fully controls the documents and the minds of its members, the past is what it wants to do is party. It also follows that though the past is alterable, it during any moment has not changed. For if it has been recreated in the form of, what is now needed, then this new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed.

The ruling group loses power, for four reasons. Or it defeated an external enemy, or it governs so clumsily, that the masses rise up, or it is allowed to form a strong and discontented middle group, either lost the confidence and the desire to rule. These reasons are not isolated; typically in varying degrees, affect all four. A ruling class which could guard against of them would remain in power permanently. Ultimately the determining factor is the mental attitude of the ruling class itself.
