In this war things get confused out there: power, ideals, the old morality, and practical military necessity. But out there with these natives, it must be a temptation to be God. Because there is a conflict in every human heart, between what is reasonable and what is not, between good and evil. And good does not always triumph. Sometimes outweighs what man hides in his soul.
Evil begets evil; the first suffering gives the concept of fun torturing the other; the idea of evil cannot enter a man's head, so that he didn't want to attach it to reality.
I was involuntarily struck by the ability of the Russian person to apply to the customs of the peoples among whom he happens to live; I don't know, worthy of censure or praise a quality of mind, but it proves the incredible flexibility and the presence of that clear common sense which pardons evil wherever it sees the need or the impossibility of its destruction.
