Dr. Figger wasn't like a doctor, and all suicides in his group, now including me, agreed not to kill yourself or not to be hung before the first of January. You can imagine the corpse hanging on the ceiling wires and thinking "If the doctor finds out I'm finished."

I used to think that humor is the only way to appreciate the beauty and the horror of the world, to glorify life in all its diversity. <...> But now I think that the opposite is true. Humor is a way to escape from the horror and beauty.
