As a child, I was terribly afraid of thunderstorms. I grew up in Texas and was so afraid that thunder and lightning meant a tornado was coming. But my mother gave me children's books that explained the nature of storms, thunder and lightning, and simply said: "The more you know about this, the less you will be afraid." And it really helped.
