Book: Time machine

Growing civilization seemed to him in the form of a chaotic heap of material which eventually must fall and crush the builders. But if this is so, yet we have no choice but to continue to live.

I understand now what lurked beneath the beauty of the inhabitants of the Upper World. What a joy they spent the day! The same excitement that the cattle in the field. Like the cattle, they knew no enemies and didn't care. And that was the end for them.

In all the cares and sorrows of earthly life seemed insignificant. I thought about how they are infinitely distant, slowly moving from the unknown past into the unknown future.

No one understood my gestures: some seemed to be simply stupid, others took my words as a joke and laughed. It cost me incredible efforts to resist and not to whip them at the laughing faces. A mad rush! But sitting in me the devil of fear and ridiculous annoyance has not yet been bridled and tried to possess me.

The family and arising out of feelings: jealousy, love of offspring, parental self-sacrifice - all this finds its justification in the inevitable dangers faced by the younger generation.

Already starting to show protest against marital jealousy, against blind maternal feelings, against every passion, and this protest will grow. All those feelings even now are not necessary, they make us miserable and, as the remains of a primitive savagery, seem incompatible with a pleasant and sublime life.

Even in our own time certain tendencies and desires, once necessary to survival, are a constant source of failure. The courage and militancy of, for example, do not help, and may even be hindrances-to a civilized man. In the state, based on the physical balance and security, power - physical or mental - would be totally inappropriate.

I thought at first that it felt to me a simple child's affection, and only then, when it was too late, I realized what I had become for her and what she did for me.

They say life is a dream, and besides, bad, miserable, short sleep, although after another that won't fit.

... even when there's no power and the human mind, gratitude and affection continue to live in the hearts.

... caste, the tendency of rich people caused by the increasing sophistication of life - the tendency to widen the gap between them and their insulting rudeness of the poor also leads to seizure of privileged classes greater and greater part of the surface of the earth for themselves.

What is the driving force of the human mind and energy, if only all biology is not an infinite number of errors? The only work and freedom.

All of our senses and abilities become acute only in the winepress of labour and necessary...

Angry and tired, I fell to the ground, but the look didn't give me a long time to sit still, I was too active a man to uncertain expectations. I was able to work for years on solving some of the problems, but to wait inactive for twenty-four hours was beyond my capacity.
