Character: Ringu Tulku Rinpoche

We usually act and react in the belief that there is “me” and “the rest of the world.” Whatever other people do is perceived and judged through the lens of the self. This leads to a constant need to defend ourselves, and gradually we get so carried away by defense that we completely close ourselves off and feel everything that happens as aggression or pain.

We can find ourselves surrounded by luxury we never dreamed of, and yet be extremely unhappy. Likewise, we can be in a very bad situation and still not feel complete despair. The difference lies in the degree of internal development, in the way we see and experience our world.
