Truly, man is an amazing creature. Even in these desperate times, passions overwhelm us. It would seem that despair should prevail, but dreams instead arise.

The strength of one passion must be judged by the strength of the other, which was sacrificed for it.

The power of one passion must be judged by the strength of another, which was sacrificed for its sake.

Reason shows us the goal, and passions lead us away from it.

Reluctantly sad!

Shakespeare is real, but his characters live in a world of extremes. They are thrown from ecstasy to suffering, from love to hate, from surprise to horror. But this is not melodrama, they are not exaggerating. Every moment is critical to them. A good actor playing in a Shakespearean play - no ... any good actor in principle - he not only utters lines, he feels them. We felt all of our characters' passions as our own. But the emotions of this or that hero do not cancel the emotions of the artist: you simply experience them all at once. Imagine that your thoughts and feelings are mixed up with the thoughts and feelings of another person. Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out who is who. We all felt very keenly. And it became an overwhelming burden for us, we bent under it, like Atlas, who supported the whole world on his shoulders.

We saw nothing in front of us but books. We were always surrounded by words and poetry: all the furious passions of the world were enclosed in leather and parchment. This is where I partially blame for what happened. Our own intrigues and mistakes seemed insignificant in comparison.

Flared up unexpectedly in your depths?

- Life will not live itself, son. You have to live it. Remember: the spirit weakens if you renounce passions.

It is better to turn away passions by mindfulness of virtues than by resistance, because passions, when they come out of their field and are erected on swearing, imprint in the mind their images and likenesses. This swearing acquires great power over the mind, greatly disturbing and discordant thinking. And if you act according to the first rule we said, then there is no trace of passions in the mind to chase them away.
