I had the right to punish and pardon my characters, to eradicate vices, to grant forgiveness to those who deserve it, to pass sentences, without justifying myself to anyone, according to my own moral laws that were in force at that time.

The main strength of fiction is its ability to help us detach from what is happening, to bandage the wounds inflicted by the surrounding cruelty.

Maintain the intoxication of writing, and the destructive reality will be powerless against you.

Pain is the best fuel for a writer.

When talking to writers, always remember that they are not normal people.

Readers read the book they want to read, not the one you wrote.
