Character: Peep Gargery

By shutting herself off from daylight, she shut herself off from immeasurably more; by becoming a recluse, she closed her heart to a thousand healing natural influences; completely lost in her lonely thoughts, she became damaged in her mind, as has always happened and will happen, and cannot help but be with anyone who dares to go against the instructions of the creator.

London was already far behind when the day dawned, timid, tearful, trembling like a beggar - in tatters of clouds and patches of fog.

It was as if we had agreed to believe that our lives were spent in continuous fun, but we secretly realized the opposite. As far as I can judge, in this sense we were not an exception to the rule.

They did approximately the same thing that, judging by the stories and books, these representatives of the law always do in such cases: they detained several people, obviously innocent; with a zeal that deserves better use, they developed theories that were clearly fantastic; and stubbornly fitted facts to their theories, instead of building theories based on facts.

My perception of the dogmas set forth in the catechism was also not clear; for example, I remember very well that promising to follow

I felt like she was playing with my heart simply because she liked it so much, not because it would be hard and painful for her to break it and throw it away.
