Book: Bread with ham

I sat and drank and thought about suicide. But I felt a strange love for my body, for my life. Covered with welts and scars, they were still mine.

Perhaps I was underdeveloped. Quite possibly. I often felt inadequate. I just wanted to get away from everything. But there was no place where I could hide. Suicide? Nothing better than any other job. I would prefer to sleep that way for five years, but would they let me.

Thoughts and words can be charming, although they are ultimately useless.

The coastal waters were full of people. What is so attractive about the beaches? Why do people like to push on them? Isn't there something more interesting?

Miss Gridis's stockings were almost flesh-colored. One got the impression that she was not wearing them at all, that she was sitting naked in front of us, and it was this apparent nakedness, her unrealness, that made the spectacle better than if she really were without stockings.

I always distanced myself from everyone and watched people from the sidelines. Kind of like theater - they were on stage, and I'm a lonely spectator.

I would never have dared to do this without a headband.

For me, the people who stood behind these books and who entered my life out of nowhere were the only salvation. Their voices spoke to me and resonated with me.
