The memoirs of the commander of the cavalry brigade Yakov Arkadievich Melkumov is the story of an active participant in the fight against Basmachism in the territory of the current socialist republics of Central Asia.
From 1920 to 1932, the author of the memoirs spent hiking in the mountains and deserts of Eastern Bukhara and Khorezm. Warmly and fondly remembers Melkumov of his comrades in the struggle - heroes-Turkestans. Some of them remained unknown to this day, others were undeservedly hammered.
Melkumov's memoirs are strictly documentary, and the reader will read with interest the pages that describe the collapse of the Bukhara Emirate, the fall of the Khiva Khanate, the fight against the international adventurer Enver Pasha and the leader of the Basmachi gangs of Eastern Bukhara Ibrahim Bey.

There is a characteristic story about the behavior of a peasant, who himself admitted that the state power, meeting a willful person, must sometimes force him to order by strict, even sometimes despotic measures. In St. Petersburg in the spring ice melted on the Neva, and it became dangerous to cross the river on ice. The mayor ordered to put police officers on the banks of the Neva and prohibit the passage on the ice. Some peasant, in spite of the cries of the policeman, walked on the ice, fell through and began to drown. The policeman saved him from death, and the peasant, instead of gratitude, began to reproach him: "What are you looking at?" The policeman says to him: "I shouted at you." - “Shouted! I should have kicked it in the face! "

This is my story about what I saw in Vietnam and how it affected my life. All events are real; I hope that chronology and geography are close enough to reality, at least that's how I see it. The names of the characters and their characteristics are changed out of respect for their right to personal privacy. I'd like to apologize to the "grumbler" if they don't like that word. I have nothing but respect for them, remembering the conditions in which they had to serve. I hope that my memories will make other veterans talk about the era of the Vietnam War and how it affected people and society as a whole. Instead of talking about the political aspects of the war, I focused on telling about the real life of a helicopter pilot in Vietnam in 1965-66. I hope that events will speak for themselves.

This is a story about a country, about love and about provincial boys and girls born in the 1980s. We all dreamed of leaving for Moscow for a better life, and none of us knew that we had to be more careful in our desires - they could come true.

Let's remember a very short, only a few pages, but piercing, touching to tears the story of Jack London "The Law of Life". It talks about the fact that the tribe abandoned their old men, who became a burden. The children gave them some food and left, leaving their parents to be eaten by wild beasts, leaving them to die. The old father, left alone by the fire, believed to the end and hoped that his sons would return for him. Can you imagine for a moment that this can be done to our parents, to our grandparents, as in this story? I'll never believe it. It's not our genetic code. Because we learned from our ancestors in a completely different way. With the values of mutual assistance, mutual assistance, solidarity, Russia has been living for more than a thousand years. And today they are the main pillar of our statehood. We received them together with Orthodoxy. These values are also the basis of our other religions, other religions of the peoples of Russia - Islam, Buddhism, Judaism. The philosophy of love for man has helped us to survive for centuries. And today, the fate of our neighbors and the fate of other people depends on our responsibility. Any other choice is unacceptable to us. I am sure and firmly know that the vast majority of us think and do so. We will save and save people - and everything else will be served.
