A portrait is when you are not the only one taking the photo. The person gives it to you.

When they pose very impeccably, the portrait comes out boring, lifeless, and, conversely, when sitting impatiently, successful surprises are obtained.

It is a pity that I am not an artist at all, it is a pity that I am not a poet at all.

I'm too timid to paint portraits, I can't look people in the face, and I wouldn't be able to do anything good.

The painter Zeuxis suddenly died of laughter at the sight of a portrait of an old woman, painted by him.

Everyone says she looks like Antoine. Literally his portrait. Although they say this about all children, even if they are not very similar. Right?

You are zero, you are a blank slate! OK! Let us take advantage of the fact that I am an artist and draw on this blank sheet of paper a portrait of a wise and spiritualized person, an aristocrat in spirit, not in rank. However, this is a crazy idea - but who is to take it on if not crazy?

One mirror is more important than a whole series of portraits.

Not a single portrait from life is unsuccessful, everyone adds something new, expresses the unspoken. <...> Any face, any landscape in the worst picture is barely noticeable, but inevitably changes in the so-called real life - and the worse the picture, the stronger this change.

In each company and battery there was a Lenin room, and in it - a huge portrait of Lenin: squinting sly eyes, the leader reads "Pravda".
For this alone, the leader could be put against the wall, for he read the anti-Soviets: at that time Pravda was headed and edited by the inveterate enemy Bukharin, later exposed and shot. Lenin showed a complete lack of revolutionary vigilance and political myopia, reading and praising what his enemies threw at him.
