The real horrors that we believe in, from the category of what Dostoevsky, Albee and MacDonald wrote about, are hatred, alienation, aging without love, entering an incomprehensible and hostile world with the uncertain gait of a young man. And in our everyday reality we often resemble a tragic-comedic mask, grinning from the outside and mournfully dropping the corners of the lips inside. Somewhere, of course, there is some central switching point, some transformer with wires that allows the two masks to be connected. And he is in the very place, in that corner of the soul, where horror stories fit so well.

Age is just one of the masks we wear.

The deceitful masks of this society have come off. How sad ... that I will not be able to see my creation ... is the future that I prophesied coming?

Everyone wears masks. After all, without this armor, we would be defenseless against the blows that life presents to us.

Indeed, the world of all people very often, and even more so the world of society, resembles masks, you know, such a whole kaleidoscope of masks, where everyone tries on a certain role. We have to cry at funerals, we have to laugh at comedies, we have to do this, that and that, in order to fully correspond to the entire surrounding reality. But if we don’t feel it, would it be fair to do so? Naturally not. But if you act according to your conscience, in agreement with your honesty, and just don't pretend, other people begin to shy away from you, avoid you, and may even clothe you with death.
